Some fifty years after his graduation from Somerset College of Art, Brian Sweet (b. 1945) continues to delight fans of his distinctive artwork. With the four paintings represented in this notecard collection, English-born Sweet turns his artist’s eye and brush toward Ireland, capturing four nostalgic scenes in gouache on board. His now signature retro style, informed by his background in commercial illustration and developed during the early 1980s, employs high contrast, saturated color, and expansive settings to dramatic and idyllic effect. Sweet’s paintings invite viewers to meander the sheep-dotted slopes round the Rock of Cashel or travel alongside the dry stone walls tracing the Gap of Dunloe. His illustrations have been included in exhibitions and collections (notably that of The College Ystrad Mynach in Wales) and have been widely commissioned for promotional and identity campaigns, book covers, and film posters.
